Random Wolverine Card Sunday - Edition One

Watching:  NBA Countdown on ABC

I rarely post on Sundays because there's no mail on Sundays.  It's unfortunate because I can usually find some free time on a Sunday.  Borrowing from TCDB's "Random Card of the Day" concept, I have decided to pick a random card from my Michigan Wolverines collection each Sunday and do a little write up.  The first card in this series, as selected by random.org, is...

A 2007 Topps Brian Griese gets the honor of being the first card.  Brian quarterbacked UM to the 1997 national title.  Brian lost the starting job in '96 but retook the job in '97.  The first time I ever attended a Michigan game was November 15, 1997 when UM visited Camp Randall to take on the Badgers.  I still have the ticket stub:

Michigan was coming off a huge win in Happy Valley and had The Game looming so this had the makings of a trap/letdown game.  My most vivid memory of this game is Woodson throwing a first quarter pass to Griese.  Brian lumbered down the sideline coming up just short of the goal line.  This YouTube clip summarizes the game with the Woodson-Griese play beginning at about the 1:05 mark.  UM slugged out a 26-16 victory setting up an epic showdown with OSU the following Saturday.  We'll save that game for another day.  The best Brian Griese memory is Keith Jackson announcing that Brian was named Rose Bowl MVP while sharing the booth with Bob Griese.  Keith makes the announcement at about the 3:35 mark in this YouTube video.

Big afternoon of hoops about to begin.  Michigan-Michigan State for the Big Ten title and Bucks-76ers both tipping at 2:30.
